Holiday Workshops

Bernard Cohen's The Writing Workshop runs after-school, school holiday, online and in-school creative writing workshops and activities for children and young people. All our workshops are led by published writers.

July 2017 holiday creative writing workshops - Now Booking

This coming holidays we'll be offering ten different workshops for ages six to fifteen, including specialist workshops for poetry, fantasy, mystery, non-fiction (rhetoric and persuasion) and our regular fun and educational workshops.

Our holiday workshops take place in the Field Studies Tower at the Education Centre Tower in Bicentennial Park, Homebush Bay (within Sydney Olympic Park) as part of Sydney's largest school holiday program, Kids in the Park. Free parking is available at the venue (Carpark P10f). Google map reference here.

You will find school holiday creative writing workshops suitable for ages 6-18 and for all skill levels. We're proud of our record in switching previously reluctant children onto the pleasures of writing and in helping ambitious young writers fulfil their literary ambitions. The Writing Workshop consistently receives 100% satisfaction rating. According to the most recent survey conducted by Sydney Olympic Park Authority (July 2014), 100 per cent of respondents were satisfied overall with The Writing Workshop course their child attended in the July 2014 school holiday program at Sydney Olympic Park. "Future Inventions" creative writing workshop for 6-9 year olds. It's new! It's shiny! It's extremely useful! What could possibly go wrong? This fun and educational workshop for younger writers uses inventions of their devising as the basis for inventive story-making. All materials provided.

"Fabulous Beasts" workshop for 8-13 year-olds. Release the mythical creatures from deep within your brain. Face the beast through fantastic places, mighty journeys and heroic acts. "Write Your Own Book" workshop for 8-13 year-olds. How to set, plan, build and finish your own extended story. Creating atmospheric settings, memorable characters and gripping plots. "Animal Tales" for 6-9 year olds. Write and illustrate your own imaginative stories about all kinds of curious and unexpected animals, wild and friendly. This is a really fun and educational workshop for younger writers. All materials provided.

"Poetry: Rhythm and Rhyme" for 9-14 year olds. Sophisticated rhythms and Ancient Greek terminology: know the difference between iambic and trochaic hexameter, and how to compose each. What rhymes with orange? Rhymes, half-rhymes and assonance. New forms.

One-day "Skilled Young Writers" workshop for 10-15 year-olds. Try out new ideas and techniques in an inspiring and enjoyable setting. Stretching your metaphors, testing new poetic forms, developing effective and believable narrative voice. One-day "Tales of Mystery and Suspense" creative writing workshop for 9-14 year-olds. The heart of the heart of the genre: slowly, so very, very slowly adding to the excruciating suspense. What was the significance of that passing truck? Whodunit? Tell you just a bit later. All you need to structure your own extended mystery story. Held at the Education Centre, Bicentennial Park, Sydney Olympic Park. With award-winning novelist Dr Bernard Cohen.

"Rhetoric and Persuasion" creative writing workshop for 8-13 year-olds. Writing is a powerful tool for advocating for a cause or persuading others to change their minds. Skills, tricks, pitfalls and mistakes, from Ancient Greece to the present day. Use humour and emotion effectively in making your case.

Workshop Leader: Bernard Cohen

Dr Bernard Cohen is a novelist and picture book writer and director of The Writing Workshop. Bernard's writing has been published around the world. His awards include the Vogel Prize, Arts Council of England Writer's Award, University of Technology Alumnus of the Year, and a unique three inclusions in the Sydney Morning Herald's Best Young Novelists. Bernard's fifth novel for adults, The Antibiography of Robert F. Menzies, was published by 4th Estate. It won the 2015 Russell Prize for Humour Writing.

Bernard has over 25 years experience conducting writing workshops for young people, and founded The Writing Workshop in 2006. He holds a DCA from University of Technology of Sydney. In 2016 he is a judge for the NSW Premier's Award for Children's Literature (Patricia Wrightson Award).
