Holiday Workshops

The Writing Workshop runs after-school, school holiday, online and in-school creative writing workshops and activities for children and young people. All our workshops are led by published authors.

July 2018 holiday creative writing workshops - Now Booking

This coming holidays we'll be offering eight different workshops for ages six to fifteen, including four never offered before and our regular popular fun and educational workshops.

Our holiday workshops take place in the Field Studies Tower at the Education Centre Tower in Bicentennial Park, Homebush Bay (within Sydney Olympic Park) as part of Sydney's largest school holiday program, Kids in the Park. Free parking is available at the venue (Carpark P10f). Google map reference here.

You will find school holiday creative writing workshops suitable for ages 6-15 and for all skill levels. We're proud of our record in switching previously reluctant children onto the pleasures of writing and in helping ambitious young writers fulfil their literary ambitions. "Animal Tales" for 6-9 year olds. Write and illustrate your own imaginative stories about all kinds of curious and unexpected animals, wild and friendly. This is a really fun and educational workshop for younger writers. All materials provided.

"Genre Writing: Adventure, Mystery, SciFi" creative writing workshop for 8-13 year-olds. Explore the elements of genre writing from detectives to dragons, conundrums to cowboys. Bring a picnic lunch and brain set to “dynamic”.

"Write Your Own Book" workshop for 8-13 year-olds. How to set, plan, build and finish your own extended story. Creating atmospheric settings, memorable characters and gripping plots. This full day (bring your own picnic lunch) will give you all the skills and inspiration you need to write your own book.

"Skilled Young Writers" workshop for 10-15 year-olds. Try out new ideas and techniques in an inspiring and enjoyable setting. Stretching your metaphors, testing new poetic forms, developing effective and believable narrative voice. This full day (bring your own picnic lunch) will build your skills and help you find new sources of inspiration. Held at the Education Centre, Bicentennial Park, Sydney Olympic Park. With award-winning novelist Dr Bernard Cohen.

"Selective School and Scholarship test preparation" writing workshop for current year five students intending to sit high school entrance tests in 2019. Build creative writing skills for the NSW Selective Schools Placement Test and scholarship tests. Conducted by The Writing Workshop’s director, Dr Bernard Cohen, this three-hour creative writing workshop is aimed at developing creative writing skills for the NSW Selective Schools Placement Test and ACER scholarship tests to be held early in 2019. The course will focus on writing across  narrative, descriptive and persuasive texts in the 20-minute test format. All materials provided. Bring a drink and snack (short break only).

"Worlds on Pages" creative writing workshop for 9-14 year olds. An observational walk through the unique Mangrove habitat of Bicentennial Park transformed into literature. What possibilities could this intertidal zone hold? How would your newly created characters see it? All materials provided. Bring a drink and snack, and a raincoat if the skies are greyish.

"Topsy-Turvy Stories" creative writing workshop for 6-9 year olds. What happens when things fall up instead of down, when everyone walks backwards (on their hands) and when pets are in charge of the family? Bring a drink, snack, and plenty of wild and wacky ideas. All materials provided.

Workshop Leader: Bernard Cohen

Dr Bernard Cohen is a novelist and picture book writer and director of The Writing Workshop. Bernard's writing has been published around the world. His awards include the Vogel Prize, Arts Council of England Writer's Award, University of Technology Alumnus of the Year, and a unique three inclusions in the Sydney Morning Herald's Best Young Novelists. Bernard's fifth novel for adults, The Antibiography of Robert F. Menzies won the 2015 Russell Prize for Humour Writing. His collection of stories (for adults), When I Saw the Animal, will be published by UQP in September 2018.

Bernard has over 25 years experience conducting writing workshops for young people, and founded The Writing Workshop in 2006. He holds a DCA from University of Technology of Sydney. In 2016 he was a judge for the NSW Premier's Awards for Literature.
